WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW…
According to the 2010 Census, of the 225 million people in the United States who were 18 and older at the time of the 2008 presidential election, only 146 million were registered to vote. And today, The PEW Center on the States reports that at least 51 million eligible citizens are unregistered. That’såÊmore than 24% of the eligible population. With the 2012 elections just around the corner, it’s important to remember the impact of each vote. As an American citizen, you have the right to choose who represents your political views and ideals.
THE POWER OF THE AMERICAN VOTE
What makes this country unique is that you truly do have a say in what happens in the Capitol. Not only in Washington DC, but in your neck of the woods, as well. Some believe that one vote won’t make a difference, but it’s the collective impact of voting that directly affects you. Become more involved by starting at the local level: get to know your mayor and city board members. Attend council meetings or read their minutes online. Be sure to stay up-to-date on those issues that are most important to you.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
- Register to vote within your county.
- Contact your local Motor Vehicle Office or a Public Assistance Agency for assistance in registering.
- Or, submit your registration form using the following tools:

- Nonpartisan Voter Services for US Citizens Overseas and Uniformed Service Members
- Think about what you want from your local and federal representatives.
- Become well-informed on the views of the candidates.
